SXSW – Interactive conference and Shoeperstar Reality Webisode for RockStartup12 Mar

First of all this has probably been one of the craziest months of my life, I have travelled over 8,000 miles in about 3 weeks from Toronto to Texas to Los Angeles and back.

I think its about time to get home. Right now I’m at SXSW on my last day just chillin’ at the SESAC Day stage cafe at the convention center in Austin, TX. – Currently just finished watching Mala Rodriguez perform – it was like a pretty girl from Spain doing some what i thought was reggatone with a strange hip hop feel – very familiar to me from working with some similar artists in Detroit. Good stuff, she was good – i’m just not feeling it personally.

I’ll be back at Wpromote tomorrow to rock out on my SEO clients and see how my friends back home are all doing. It feels like I’ve been living out of a suitcase…toronto, mammoth, austin, LA.

What pisses me off is that I never applied to this conference with either of the bands I’m in, but its okay because right now I really need to focus on my work and get settled.

So, on Monday after my flight delays were finally figured out (they closed the houston airport while I was sitting on a plane waiting to take off) I arrived to meet Ted Murphy from IZEA and Jeremy Shoemaker (Shoemoney.com) from ‘Shoeperstar’ – a competition put on by RockStartup which I won with my ‘69 reasons…’ post.

As I mentioned I’m at SXSW and I must say that this is weird watching some of these artists who wear strange outfits to make their music sound better.

she had on a metal mask that was very bizarro….

So we started filming right away and it was very relaxed, no pressure and pretty fun. I was mostly concerned that my content wasn’t very planned out, but everything went really well and I’m excited to finally see the RockStartUp episode when it is finished. I know that Travis has a lot of work to do – he’s their cameraman editor and I guess episode producer.

These guys were all really fun to work with by the way. We had a blast. Now if you see me drinking a lot on camera it is simply because there was free beer everywhere….keep in mind i may have had a beer in my hand a lot, but it was often the same one, or a new one. Anyways, we managed to get to several parties while here that were OPEN BAR from sponsors so that was cool.

So I got a chance to sit with Ted and Jeremy and just talk about SEO stuff and learn as much as I could in the short time I had with them. We were able to check out a lot of the conference and meet lots of people – who I never would have hadn’t I wont this contest. I’m very grateful how everything worked out.

One of the things that the guys at Izea and Shoemoney did was bring me to the ‘bloghouse’ which was a room full some of the more influential names in the industry. They put me in a white t=shirt and gave me a black marker with the goal to get as many websites and business cards as possible from the folks in there, while getting the person signing me to beatbox for their ‘webisode’.

It actually went over really well as the room (aside from guitar hero in the corner) was really kinda just relaxed until we showed up with cameras and this crazy idea from izea.

I’ll post pics once I have them, right now I just wanted to post something as I should(and will be) post on a regular basis. One thing I learned that was of utmost importance – schedule your blogposts and do them just as though they were part of your day job. My friends at Wpromote have recently adopted a similar strategy about blog posts and it seems to be the way to go.

I’m now watching this pretty tight little indie rock band. But man no one ever says who the hell they are! so I don’t know who they are even if I wanted to.

So a highlight from that room was when Mr Guy Kawasaki paid some girl 20 bucks to find out who I was. It was pretty funny and you’ll see more of that in the next episode of RockStartup.

Ahh they are called the ‘young lords’. from nyc. I guess someone told him to tell us their name. thank you.

So I’m learning at a great rate and it will be cool to see where this all goes. I think the best advice I’ve got so far was from Jeremy basically saying to just ‘do it’ and not really worry too much.

okay more to come….flying out shortly.
